In our first lecture, our lecturer Mr.Choy talk about modernism which is one of the art movements.

In some part I am still very blur and not really understand, just we need to do more research and some example from web to understand well.

Modernism is the industrial revolution in Europe back in the 1850's. It first started  in England and then it spread throughout the Europe. There are changes in economy, society and culture when revolution took place. It also the important changes in human society. It refers to the broad movement in Western arts and literature that gathered pace from around 1850, and is characterised by a deliberate rejection of the styles of the past; emphasising innovation and experimentation in forms, materials, techniques in order to create art work that better reflected modern society.

There were 3 new social groups which is high class, middle class and low class. Bourgeoisie refers to the middle class, people who own most of the wealth in a capitalist system. They reject the past styles and try with something new.

Although many different styles are encompassed by the term, there are certain underlying principles that define modernist art: A rejection of history and conservative values (such as realistic depiction of subjects); innovation and experimentation with form (the shapes, colours and lines that make up the work) with a tendency to abstraction; and an emphasis on materials, techniques and processes. Modernism has also been driven by various social and political agendas. These were often utopian, and modernism was in general associated with ideal visions of human life and society and a belief in progress.

By the 1960s modernism had become a dominant idea of art, and a particularly narrow theory of modernist painting had been formulated by the highly influential American critic Clement Greenberg. A reaction then took place which was quickly identified as postmodernism.
